What is the difference between real and fake BAPE hoodies?
For a manufacturer, distinguishing a real BAPE (A Bathing Ape) hoodie from a fake is an exercise in spotting production shortcuts.
While “super-fakes” exist, BAPE’s manufacturing process involves several complex, expensive steps (like chenille patches and specific embroidery registration) that counterfeit factories often struggle to replicate perfectly because it eats into their margins.
Here is the technical breakdown of the differences.
1. The “WGM” Chenille Patch (The Density Test)
The “World Gone Mad” (WGM) patch on the hood is the most expensive component to produce correctly.
-
Real: The chenille (the fuzzy carpet-like fabric) is dense and tight. You cannot see the backing fabric through the loops. The “W,” “G,” and “M” have distinct, sharp outlines with precise embroidery borders. The letters look “puffy” and 3D.
-
Fake: The chenille is loose or sparse. If you look closely, you can see the base fabric underneath the loops. The border stitching is often messy or uneven, making the letters look “flat” rather than raised.
2. The Shark Teeth (Pattern Alignment)
This is a pattern-making challenge. The hood is split into two panels joined by a zipper.
-
Real: When zipped up, the shark teeth on the left and right panels must align perfectly. The gap between the teeth should be consistent across the zipper line.
-
Fake: Because of poor cutting or sewing tolerances, the teeth are often misaligned (one side is 2mm higher than the other). The printed teeth might also look “squashed” or distorted near the zipper tape.
3. The Zipper Hardware (YKK vs. Generic)
-
Real: BAPE uses high-end YKK zippers (often size #5 or #8 depending on the era) or custom BAPE-branded pulls. The mechanism is smooth but feels “heavy” and substantial.
-
Fake: The zipper feels light or “plasticky.” It often jams or feels gritty when zipping. The pull tab itself might be made of a cheaper, shinier alloy that scratches easily.
4. The Sleeve Tag (The “Frankenstein” Ape)
The small tag on the sleeve cuff is the most common giveaway for mid-tier fakes.
-
Real: The Ape head logo is embroidered with high precision. The face shape is specific—the jawline is curved correctly. The registration (alignment) of the face within the tag border is perfect.
-
Fake: The Ape often looks “fat” or “squashed.” The embroidery thread is too thick, causing the details of the mouth or eyes to bleed together. The stitching attaching the tag to the cuff often has loose threads.
5. The Neck Tags (The Gold Tag)
-
Real: The small gold tag sewn behind the size tag has a specific texture. It is not just flat gold foil; it has a slightly rough, glittering texture.
-
Fake: Often a flat, shiny, reflective gold sticker-like material. It lacks the tactile grain of the authentic tag.
6. The Wash Tag (The “Asterisk” Blot)
This is the “insider” test that most counterfeiters miss because it requires a specific font/printer setup.
-
Real: Look at the asterisk/dot (*) next to “A Bathing Ape” or the sizing letter on the wash tag. On authentic items, this character is often slightly irregular or “blob-like.” It is not a perfect standard font asterisk.
-
Fake: It looks like a perfect, standard Arial font asterisk (*).
7. Fabric Weight & Direction
-
Real: BAPE hoodies use a stiff, heavyweight cotton fleece (usually 100% cotton). It feels rugged and holds its shape (the hood stands up on its own). The “loopback” interior is tight.
-
Fake: Often uses a cotton/polyester blend to save money. The fabric feels softer, drapier, and thinner. The hood flops down because the fabric lacks the GSM (grams per square meter) to support it.
Summary for Manufacturing Audit
If you are looking at a sample:
-
Check the Chenille: Is it dense and 3D?
-
Check the Zipper: Does it align perfectly across the seam?
-
Check the Wash Tag: Is the font specific and slightly imperfect (the “blob”), or standard generic text?
