What’s the difference between BAPE and A Bathing Ape?

There is no difference between BAPE and A Bathing Ape. They are the exact same brand.

BAPE is simply the acronym and common nickname for the full brand name: A Bathing Ape. You will often see both names used interchangeably on their clothing tags and marketing.

Here is the breakdown of the name and why people sometimes get confused.

1. The Name Origin

The brand was founded in 1993 by Nigo in Tokyo. The full name is “A Bathing Ape in Lukewarm Water”.

  • The Meaning: It is a tongue-in-cheek reference to the Japanese habit of soaking in a bath until the water goes cold (lukewarm), symbolizing the “over-indulgence” and comfort of the youth generation that consumes streetwear.

  • The Shortening: Because the full name is too long for casual conversation, it was shortened to BAPE (pronounced “bay-p”).

2. The “Real” Difference (BAPE vs. AAPE)

While BAPE and A Bathing Ape are the same, you might be confusing them with AAPE.

  • BAPE (A Bathing Ape): The main, premium line. Famous for the “Shark Hoodie,” “Camo” patterns, and high prices ($100+ for tees, $400+ for hoodies).

  • AAPE (By A Bathing Ape): A “diffusion line” (sub-brand) launched in 2012. It is more affordable and targeted at a younger, broader audience. The logo is a smaller, round face rather than the classic large Ape Head.

Classic Example: The College Tee

This shirt is the perfect example of how the names are used together. It features the classic “Ape Head” logo but typically includes the full text “A Bathing Ape” printed around it.

The 1ST CAMO COLLEGE TEE is one of the brand’s most recognizable entry-level pieces. It features the signature camouflage pattern filled into the “Ape Head” logo. Unlike the louder Shark Hoodies, this tee focuses on the core branding that has remained unchanged since the 90s.

Summary

  • BAPE = A Bathing Ape (Same expensive, premium brand).

  • AAPE = A cheaper, separate sub-brand.

If you are looking to buy your first piece, the College Tee or the Shark Hoodie are the two most iconic items to start with.
