What to wear under cap and gown men
For a polished look that keeps you comfortable, the general rule for men is to wear business casual to semi-formal attire under a graduation gown.
Since only your collar, pant legs, and shoes will be visible while you are wearing the gown, these are the most critical elements to get right.
1. The Shirt (Crucial)
The most visible part of your outfit will be your collar, which sits above the gown’s neckline.
-
Best Option: A solid white or light blue dress shirt. These colors contrast well with dark gowns (black, navy, royal blue).
-
Style: Ensure it has a stiff, crisp collar. A button-down collar is great because it stays in place and won’t get messy under the gown’s yoke.
-
Avoid: T-shirts or polo shirts. They often look too casual and the collars tend to flatten under the weight of the gown.
2. The Pants
Your lower legs will be visible as you walk across the stage.
-
Best Option: Dark dress trousers or chinos (black, navy, charcoal, or dark khaki). Dark colors are safer because they blend better with the gown and won’t distract from the regalia.
-
Fit: Slim or tailored fit is best to avoid “billowing” fabric around your ankles.
-
Avoid: Jeans (especially light wash), shorts, or sweatpants. Even if you think no one will see them, they often show when you sit down or walk up stairs.
3. The Shoes
This is the one item that is fully visible the entire time.
-
Best Option: Leather dress shoes (Oxfords, Derbies, or Loafers) in black or brown.
-
Comfort: You will be standing and waiting for long periods. Break in new shoes a week before the ceremony to avoid blisters.
-
Socks: Wear dark dress socks (calf-length) so your bare skin doesn’t show when you sit down.
-
Avoid: Sneakers, flip-flops, sandals, or dirty work boots.
4. The Tie (Recommended)
While optional, a tie adds a classic finish to the visible collar area.
-
Style: A standard necktie is traditional. Bow ties can also work but are less common.
-
Color: Solid colors or subtle patterns are best. Avoid loud novelty prints that might clash with your school colors or honor cords.
5. Should You Wear a Suit Jacket?
-
Generally, No: Graduation gowns are made of polyester and do not breathe well. Wearing a suit jacket underneath often leads to overheating, and the bulkiness can make the gown fit poorly (making you look “puffy”).
-
Exception: If the ceremony is outdoors in very cold weather, a jacket may be necessary. Otherwise, just wear the dress shirt and carry the jacket to put on after the ceremony for photos.
