What is the Brooks Brothers logo?

The Brooks Brothers logo is known as the Golden Fleece.1

It depicts a sheep suspended in a ribbon (a sling).2 While it may look unusual to modern eyes—some even joke that it looks like a sheep being weighed or transported—it is actually one of the oldest and most prestigious symbols in the history of the textile trade.

Here is the breakdown of its history and meaning:

1. The Visual

The logo features a lamb hanging from a ribbon that wraps around its midsection. It is almost always depicted in gold (hence the name) or embroidered in a tonal thread on their shirts.

2. The Meaning (Why a hanging sheep?)

  • The Symbol of Wool Merchants: Long before Brooks Brothers existed, this image was the universal symbol for fine wool merchants in Europe. If you walked down a street in 16th-century London or Flanders and saw a Golden Fleece hanging over a shop door, you knew that shop sold elite woolen cloth.

  • The “Gold” Standard: It signaled that the wool was of the highest purity and value.

3. The Adoption by Brooks Brothers (1850)

  • The Story: In 1850, Henry Sands Brooks (the founder) saw the symbol painted above the doors of elite fabric dealers while traveling in London. He wanted his American company to be associated with that same level of European quality.

  • The Decision: He adopted it as the company’s trademark.3 It has been used continuously for over 170 years, making it one of the oldest corporate logos in American history.

4. The Historical & Mythological Roots

  • Greek Mythology: The symbol originates from the myth of Jason and the Argonauts, who went on an epic quest to find the “Golden Fleece” (the gold-hair coat of a winged ram), which represented authority and kingship.

  • The Order of the Golden Fleece: In 1430, Philip the Good (Duke of Burgundy) established the Order of the Golden Fleece, a prestigious order of chivalry.4 The “sheep in a ribbon” was their emblem. This cemented the image as a symbol of nobility and high status across Europe.

Summary

When you see the Brooks Brothers logo, you are looking at a 15th-century symbol of aristocracy and fine wool trading that was adopted by an American retailer in 1850 to signal “we sell the best cloth in the world.”
