What to wear under a wetsuit
Under a wetsuit, choose a base layer designed for water activity—compression shorts, rash guards, or thermal skins made from quick-drying knit materials such as Lycra, neoprene, or spandex blends. These prevent chafing and make putting on the wetsuit easier. For cold waters, thermal fleece or lined knit base layers retain heat. Avoid cotton—it absorbs water and causes discomfort. A seamless performance knit ensures flexibility and temperature control. Many divers prefer purpose-built “skin suits” that act as a barrier between skin and neoprene, improving hygiene and prolonging wetsuit life. Fit is crucial: snug but not restrictive.
