Will a cotton knit sweater shrink?

Yes, absolutely. Cotton knit sweaters are notorious for shrinking, but the way they shrink is different from wool.1

From a manufacturing and consumer perspective, here is the breakdown of why it happens and how much to expect.

1. The “Why”: Relaxation Shrinkage

Cotton fibers do not “felt” like wool does (where scales lock together). Instead, cotton undergoes relaxation shrinkage.2

  • The Manufacturing Tension: During the knitting process, cotton yarn is pulled under tension. The loops are stretched out.

  • The Trigger (Heat & Water): When you apply hot water or hot air (dryer), the fibers relax and try to return to their natural, curly, unstretched state.3 The knit loops tighten up, pulling the garment inward.

2. How Much Will It Shrink?

  • High Heat (Hot Wash + Hot Dryer): Expect to lose one full size (roughly 5–10% shrinkage).

  • Length vs. Width: Knitwear often shrinks more in length (getting shorter) than in width. You might end up with a “boxy” sweater that exposes your belt line.

3. Can You Prevent It?

You can minimize it to almost zero if you follow these rules:

  1. Cold Water Only: Wash on 30°C (85°F) or cold.

  2. No Dryer: This is the most important rule. The tumbling action combined with heat is what kills cotton knits.

  3. Reshape While Damp: When you take the sweater out of the washer, lay it flat and gently tug the sleeves and body back to their original dimensions before it dries.

4. Can You Un-Shrink It? (The Good News)

Unlike wool (which is ruined forever if it shrinks), cotton shrinkage is often reversible.4

  • The Fix: Soak the sweater in warm water with a little hair conditioner (to lubricate the fibers).5 Gently stretch it back out to the desired size while it is wet, then pin it down or weigh it down flat to dry. It won’t be perfect, but you can usually gain back 70–80% of the lost size.

Summary

  • Will it shrink? Yes, if you use heat.

  • Is it permanent? Usually no, you can stretch it back.6

  • Safest method: Cold wash, lay flat to dry.
