Will hoodies shrink in the dryer?
The short answer is yes, but how much they shrink depends almost entirely on the material composition.
Here is the breakdown of what to expect based on the fabric label inside your hoodie.
1. 100% Cotton (High Risk)
-
Shrinkage Potential: High. You can lose up to 3–5% of the size (about a full size down) in a single hot cycle.1
-
Why: Cotton fibers are stretched under tension during the manufacturing process. Heat and agitation cause them to relax and snap back to their original, shorter length.
-
Note: Even “Pre-shrunk” cotton will still shrink slightly over time if exposed to high heat.2
2. Cotton/Polyester Blends (Moderate Risk)
-
Shrinkage Potential: Low to Moderate.
-
Why: Polyester is a synthetic plastic fiber that is heat-set.3 It acts as a “scaffold” for the cotton, physically preventing the garment from shrinking too much. A 50/50 blend will hold its shape much better than 100% cotton.4
3. 100% Polyester / Performance Fleece (Zero Risk)
-
Shrinkage Potential: None.
-
Why: Synthetic fibers do not shrink in water or standard heat. However, high heat can melt or damage the texture of the fabric, making it feel rough, but the size won’t change.
4. Wool (Extreme Risk)
-
Shrinkage Potential: Catastrophic.
-
Why: If you put a wool hoodie in the dryer, it will likely shrink to doll size and become stiff (a process called felting).5 Never put wool in the dryer.
How to Avoid Shrinkage
If you want to keep the fit exactly as it is:
-
Air Dry (Best): Lay it flat or hang it over a rack. (Don’t hang by the shoulders when wet, or it will stretch out vertically).
-
Low Heat / Delicate (Okay): If you must use the dryer, use the “Tumble Dry Low” or “Air Fluff” setting. The danger comes from high heat, not the tumbling itself.
-
Don’t Over-Dry: Take the hoodie out while it is still slightly damp and let it air dry the rest of the way.
Can You Fix a Shrunk Hoodie?
Sometimes. You can try soaking it in lukewarm water mixed with hair conditioner (which relaxes the fibers) and then gently stretching it back out while wet. It doesn’t always work, but it’s worth a try for cotton hoodies.
