Can Ralph Lauren be made in China?
Yes, authentic Ralph Lauren products are frequently made in China.1
A “Made in China” tag on a Ralph Lauren item does not mean it is a fake.2 While the brand’s ultra-luxury “Purple Label” is often made in Italy, a huge portion of their standard “Polo Ralph Lauren” line (including polo shirts, jackets, and accessories) is manufactured in China.3
Here is how to tell if your item is real or a counterfeit.
1. Know Your Labels
-
Made in China: Common for Polo Ralph Lauren (Blue Label), Lauren Ralph Lauren (Green Label/Department Store line), and Polo Golf.4
-
Made in Italy: Typically reserved for Ralph Lauren Purple Label (High-end luxury) and some Ralph Lauren Collection (Women’s runway) items.
-
Made in Other Countries: You will also frequently see Vietnam, Cambodia, Sri Lanka, and India on authentic tags.
2. How to Spot a “Fake” Made in China
Since the country of origin isn’t a red flag, you have to look at the quality to determine authenticity.
-
The Pony Embroidery: This is the biggest giveaway.
-
Real: The horse’s tail should be clearly visible and separated from the body.5 The rider’s mallet should be straight. The back leg should be distinct.
-
Fake: The horse often looks like a “blob.” The leg might merge with the tail, or the embroidery will look messy on the reverse side (inside the shirt).6
-
-
The Buttons:
-
Real: Authentic polos almost always use cross-stitched buttons (an “X” pattern) using thread that matches the shirt color.7 They are often mother-of-pearl (pearly) on higher-end items or high-quality matte plastic.8
-
Fake: Often use a simple parallel stitch (“=”) and generic white plastic buttons.
-
-
The Hem:
-
Real: On a classic mesh polo, the back hem is slightly longer than the front hem (this is called a “tennis tail” designed to stay tucked in).9
-
Fake: Often has a straight hem where the front and back are the same length.
-
Verdict: If you bought your item from a major department store (like Macy’s or Nordstrom) or the official website and it says “Made in China,” it is 100% authentic. If you bought it from a street vendor or a “too good to be true” website ($15 for a new polo), it is likely a fake, regardless of the country tag.
