When did the cardigan come out?

The cardigan emerged in the mid-1800s, inspired by James Brudenell, the 7th Earl of Cardigan, a British military officer. Soldiers wore knitted waistcoats that opened in front for ease of movement. The design evolved into the modern button-front knitwear piece. Today, OEM factories reproduce classic and modern cardigan silhouettes across 3–16 gauge (GG) using fibers like merino, cotton, and cashmere.
